Theme: "Our World Above" Place this above the bulletin
board.
Music theme: *Study of "The Planets" by Holst.
*Learn "Pizza Planets" Song. (This song is based upon
"My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.")
Grades involved: 3rd, 4th and 5th
Bulletin board background: Black garbage bags stapled to the board.
Border: Metallic, silver bulletin board border or solid black
bulletin board border. (Metallic is the prettiest.)
Planets: Place the nine planets from left to right on the bulletin
board. Not in a straight line, but at various placements (up and
down). Place the planets
in the correct order from left to right.
3rd GRADERS:
*Teach the students facts about each of the planets.
*Provide a spaceman for each third grader after you study about the
planets.
*On Spaceman write> "I want to go to ___________ because
______. (Students will fill-in the planet and reason based upon the
facts they learned.)
*Students will color and cut out the space men to be placed on
and/or hung around the bulletin board.
4th GRADERS:
*Students will compose music based upon the shapes of a variety of
well-known constellations. Display their printed music on or around
the bulletin board.
*Record or video the students performing their compositions and
play/show the tape/video while students pass by the board.
5th GRADERS:
*Give each student a picture of an instrument. (McGraw-Hill black-line
instrument pictures are great for this.)
*Give each student a black paper. Provide a thumbtack for each child. Tell them
to poke holes along the OUTLINE of the instrument into the black paper. (The
picture is on top of the black paper.) Draw a chalk line along the holes in the
black paper. Add stars here and there--like stars in a constellation. Cut out
around the edges of the constellation. *Name each instrument constellation after
the instrument for which it was created. Example: Banjobe -The Banjo
Constellation.
*Write a very short story about each constellation. Place the constellations and
their stories on the bulletin board.
Placement of space-men, constellations and stories should be placed at random
all over the board. Spaced around, over under beside, etc. all of the planets.
(Music by fourth graders will be placed to the side of the bulletin board when
the tape and/or video will be presented.)
For an extra added attraction, get paint that can be used on plastic. Purchase
sponges in star shapes - I found at a craft store. Place silver colored, painted
stars all over the bulletin board.
