O Say Can You See

Submitted by Megan

I have been working on something called the Star Spangled Banner project that is sponsored through the History Channel. My entire unit is on the song and its history, as well as the current move to preserve it before it is lost forever to deterioration. We learn the song and what the words mean, do lesson plans based on Math, Social Studies, Language Arts and Music. Then I show the video that the history channel put out in December.

We made our own flags, and I allowed them the same fluidity in designing them that Major Armistead allowed Mary Pickersgill when she sewd the Flag. I then made up my own "Ft. McHenry" plus some warships and clouds with the words, "O say can you see" above it. This is a very popular project and well worth the effort. Now even the Kindergarten kids know what a rampart is and why Francis Scott key saw the banner through the early dawns light, etc....
